Charles "Buddy" Bolden (Born September 6, 1877 Died November 4, 1931) - No Recordings. Performed between 1895 to 1907? Performed on cornet and was an influential musician in New
Orleans more in print. He was not a jazz musician as the term "Jazz" as a
musical definition did not exist during his years as a performer. His band
performed with the standard combination of brass and string instruments used in
the popular society music of the day. He was a predecessor of jazz and may have
played in an unconventional manner in comparison to other musicians of his time.
Unfortunately, there is absolutely no one who knows how he really sounded aside
from oral recollections which may or may not be correct. With no recordings we
can only make assumptions to how he might have sounded telling people he was
great or that he was awful ... we will never know.
Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB) - Recorded between January 30, 1917 to
February 18, 1938 and
1997 to present. There is an outstanding ODJB currently performing
internationally led by Jimmy LaRocca, the
original leaders son, on trumpet.
