Quote: Did You Know? Jazz music was born in New Orleans at the turn of the twentieth century, a combination of many musical styles, including blues, gospel and ragtime. The originality of the art form came from its focus on improvisation.

Here is a general timeline of New Orleans jazz icons and important information to help understand early New Orleans jazz:

bullet

George "Papa Jack" Laine (b. 1873) - Not recorded and not a jazz musician as the musical definition term did not exist during his years as a performer. Leader of a brass band in the late 1800's and early 1900's. They performed rags, marches and general society music of the day. This was a seed band for many young sidemen who became famous jazz musicians.

bullet

Buddy Bolden (b. 1877) - Not recorded and not a jazz musician as the musical definition term did not exist during his years as a performer.

bullet

Joe "King" Oliver (b. 1885) first recorded jazz in 1923

bullet

Edward "Kid" Ory (b. 1886) first recorded jazz in 1922

bullet

Nick LaRocca (b. 1889) first recorded jass in 1917; Original Dixieland Jass band ... the very first jass recordings for both Victor and Columbia records. The band name changed between 1918-1919 to include Jazz and they secured the name as a musical definition term from that point forward. These first records outsold any others until 1923 and most bands changed their size and sound to follow the successful recordings of the ODJB.

bullet

Freddie Keppard (b. 1889) first recorded jazz in 1926

bullet

Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (b. 1890) predominantly a ragtime pianist, he first recorded jazz in 1923

bullet

Sydney Bechet (b. 1897) first recorded jazz in 1924 as a sideman then under his own name in 1932

bullet

Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong (b. 1901) first recorded jazz in 1923 as a sideman then under his own name in 1925

Charles "Buddy" Bolden (Born September 6, 1877 Died November 4, 1931) - No Recordings. Performed between ca. 1895 to 1907.
Buddy performed on cornet and was an influential musician in New Orleans more in print and discussions after his death. He was not a jazz musician as the term "Jazz" as a musical definition did not exist during his years as a performer. His band performed with the standard combination of brass and string instruments used in the popular society music of the day. He was a predecessor of jazz and may have played in an unconventional manner in comparison to other musicians of his time. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no one who knows how he really sounded aside from oral recollections which may or may not be correct. With no recordings we can only make assumptions to how he might have sounded. Telling people he was great or that he was awful ... is something we will never know.
