This style has a very long tradition dating back prior to the turn of the last century!

A Parade through the French Quarter or a classic New Orleans Jazz Funeral come to mind when thinking of the Brass Bands.

Papa "Jack" Laine's Reliance Brass Band in the 1890's and the Tuxedo Brass Band from the 1910's are two from the early New Orleans scene. Today there are many Brass Bands mainly performing the "street style" or more of a jam session feel - these are exciting and energetic bands. A few perform in the very old traditional style of Papa Jack Laine, others perform the classic New Orleans Jazz standards in a parading or Brass Band setting and some perform new original material along with the older songs.

New Orleans Spice - Parade of Classics (DHMP-0801)

The music on the New Orleans Spice CD entitled "Parade of Classics" is fun, exciting, musical and captivating. It is classic New Orleans traditional jazz at its best. This is "feel-good" music in its finest form. The CD has 16 selections of recognized songs performed by a few of the best musicians in New Orleans today.

The New Orleans Spice is a New Orleans jazz band but is also an unconventional Brass Band performing classic New Orleans jazz standards for many parades through the streets of New Orleans every year for conventions, Mardi Gras events and jazz weddings.

"All of the participants are at the top of their games in this one."
Tom Jacobsen - Mississippi Rag, January 2002
